چکیده
Abstract The dynamic interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate (POM) are central in nutrient cycling freshwater ecosystems. However, the molecular-level mechanisms of such still poorly defined. Here, we study spatial differences chemical (i.e., individual proteinaceous amino acids) microbial 16S rRNA) composition suspended sediments River Chew, UK. We then applied a compound-specific stable isotope probing (SIP) approach to test potential assimilation 13 C, 15 N-glutamate (Glu) N-NO 3 − into biomass by particle-associated communities over 72-h period. Our results demonstrate that particles is strongly influenced effluent sewage treatment works. Fluxes percentages both isotopically labelled substrates acids showed contrasting dynamics processing at each site linked primary biosynthetic metabolic pathways. Preferential molecule glutamate evidence its direct newly synthesised was obtained. provides quantitative molecular information on which low weight DOM mineralised water column compared an inorganic substrate. This paramount for better understanding fate aquatic

Carbon and nitrogen assimilation in deep subseafloor microbial cells.
Remarkable numbers of microbial cells have been observed in global shallow to deep subseafloor sediments. Accumulating evidence indicates that deep and ancient sediments harbor living microbial life, where the flux of nutrients and energy are extremely low. However, their physiology and energy requirements remain largely unknown. We used stable isotope tracer incubation and nanometer-scale seco...
متن کاملSymbiont carbon and nitrogen assimilation in the Cassiopea–Symbiodinium mutualism
Symbiotic interactions in the marine environment have long been represented by mutualisms between photosymbionts and benthic marine invertebrates like corals and sponges. Although ‘upside-down’ epibenthic jellyfish in the genus Cassiopea also derive a substantial metabolic benefit from abundant communities of the dinoflagellate symbiont Symbiodinium, comparatively little is known about the effi...
متن کاملSimultaneous tracing of carbon and nitrogen isotopes in human cells.
Stable isotope tracing is a powerful method for interrogating metabolic enzyme activities across the metabolic network of living cells. However, most studies of mammalian cells have used (13)C-labeled tracers only and focused on reactions in central carbon metabolism. Cellular metabolism, however, involves other biologically important elements, including nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphate an...

15 صفحه اولScale-dependent carbon : nitrogen : phosphorus seston stoichiometry in marine and freshwaters
The classical Redfield ratio of carbon106 : nitrogen16 : phosphorus1 is a cornerstone of biogeochemistry. With the use of .2,000 observations of the chemistry of particulate matter from small and large lakes, as well as nearand off-shore marine environments, we found that the best model to describe seston stoichiometry depended on the scale of analysis. We also found that there were better esti...
